The Platform – Standing Firm Through the Five Tests

The Purpose

Allāh ʿazza wa jall declares:

“We will certainly test you with a touch of fear and hunger, and loss of wealth, lives, and fruits. But give good news to those who patiently endure.”
— Sūrah al-Baqarah (2:155)

Subḥānallāh. This verse outlines a universal curriculum—five core areas where every human being will face trial:

  • Fear – of the future, of loss, of the unknown
  • Hunger – literal scarcity or unfulfilled needs
  • Loss of Wealth – financial collapse, failed business
  • Loss of Lives – death of a loved one, severing of connection
  • Loss of Provision – unemployment, failed effort

These are not random misfortunes. The Arabic word for calamity here is muṣībah, derived from the root aṣāba—meaning to strike the target. This tells us our tests are precise, deliberate, and never miss their mark.

Rasūlullāh ﷺ said:

“What struck you was never going to miss you, and what missed you was never going to strike you.”
— Sunan Abī Dāwūd (4699), classed as ḥasan by al-Albānī

This is the essence of belief in Divine Decree (al-Qadr).

But Allāh does not just announce the test. He provides the answer sheet. In the very next verse, He defines the successful responders:

“Those who, when a calamity strikes them, say, ‘Indeed, to Allāh we belong, and indeed, to Him we shall return.'”
— Sūrah al-Baqarah (2:156)

Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rāji’ūn.

This is not a passive slogan for funerals. It is the active, verbal platform of the believer. It is the statement of ṣabr (patient perseverance) that transforms a painful strike into a purification.

By saying it, you affirm four pillars at once:

  • Ownership – We belong to Allāh. Nothing we have is truly ours.
  • Return – We are going back to Him. Every loss is temporary.
  • Acceptance – This is from His decree and wisdom. He does not err.
  • Hope – Our true compensation and home are with Him.

Allāh then gives glad tidings:

“Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is they who are the rightly guided.”
— Sūrah al-Baqarah (2:157)

Blessings. Mercy. Guidance. These are the rewards for the one who says Innā lillāh with a heart that truly believes.

So when fear, hunger, or loss strikes your life, remember: Allāh announced this exam before you arrived. He gave you the formula. He showed you the example.

Your task is not to avoid the test. Your task is to pass it.

And you pass it by saying: Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rāji’ūn. Then trusting. Then hoping. Then watching Allāh bring forth from your loss a replacement you could never have imagined.

This platform of patience is what turns trials into elevation. When fear, hunger, or loss hits, your platform is not shaken, because it is anchored in the Eternal.

May Allāh azza wa jall make us among those who say Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rāji’ūn with conviction, and grant us the best of replacements from where we least expect.

And may He resurrect us with aṣ-Ṣābirīn, aṣ-Ṣiddīqīn, ash-Shuhadā’, al-Anbiyā’, our beloved Rasūlullāh ﷺ, and the Ṣaḥābah ikrām. And may He make us among them in Jannah.

Āmīn yā Rabb al-‘Ālamīn, bi rahmatika yā Arḥam ar-Rāḥimīn.
